Don't touch it
No breaking, drilling, sanding or sweeping. Intact material is low risk; disturbed material isn't. Close the door on the room if dust is visible.

Common questions
How do I know if my house has asbestos?
If it was built or refurbished before 2000, assume it may. The only certainties are a survey or a lab test of the specific material — age, appearance and guesswork settle nothing.
What does asbestos look like?

Is asbestos dangerous if left alone?
Intact, sealed and undisturbed asbestos in good condition is usually low risk and often safest managed in place. The danger is disturbing it — drilling, sanding, breaking, demolition.
What year did they stop using asbestos in buildings?
Brown and blue asbestos were banned in 1985; white asbestos (chrysotile) in 1999. Anything built or refurbished before 2000 can contain it.
Do all pre-2000 buildings contain asbestos?
No — use declined through the 1990s and many buildings are clear. But roughly half the UK's building stock predates the ban, so pre-2000 buildings are treated as "may contain" until surveyed.
Who can remove asbestos from a building?
Depends on the material: high-risk materials like lagging, sprayed coatings and most AIB need an HSE-licensed contractor like Innov8; lower-risk materials like cement can be removed as non-licensed work with proper controls.
