Asbestos Roofing Felt & Bitumen Products.

Bitumen products, flat-roof felt, shed coverings, gutter linings and even damp-proof courses, often used asbestos fibre as reinforcement.

Where you'll find it

Garage and extension flat roofs, shed and outbuilding felt, gutter and valley linings and DPC strips in walls of pre-1980 buildings.

The risk

Among the lower-risk products because fibres are locked in bitumen, but burning, grinding or power-stripping releases them, so old-school torch-off refurbishment is the danger point.

Removal and cost

Removed cold, rolled and wrapped as controlled non-licensed work, typically priced with the re-roof so you get one quote for strip and replacement. Figures are industry guide rates, not Innov8 Group prices, we're typically cheaper. Contact us for an official quotation.

Asbestos in flat roofs and shed roofs

Bituminous roofing felt made before the mid-1980s often used an asbestos paper carrier inside the bitumen layers. It covers flat roofs on extensions and garages, porch roofs, shed and outbuilding roofs, and turns up as sarking felt under tiles. The asbestos is well bonded in bitumen, so an intact felt roof is genuinely low risk — the problems start when the felt is stripped, cut back for repairs, or burned off, and when old felt is found dumped in lofts and gardens as offcuts.

Why disposal is the real issue

Skips are where asbestos felt causes trouble. Roofers strip a felt roof, throw it in a mixed skip, and the transfer station rejects the whole load — turning a small roofing job into an expensive contaminated-waste problem. Asbestos felt must be separated, double-wrapped and consigned to a licensed facility. We handle collection and consigned disposal for roofing contractors as well as full strip and re-roof projects, and our disposal guide explains the paperwork.

Testing and re-roofing

Felt is cheap to confirm: one £125 lab test on a corner sample settles it before a roofer quotes. Where felt is confirmed, removal is usually non-licensed work done with the roof strip — wetted, rolled, wrapped and consigned — and we can re-board and re-cover the roof as part of the same contract, so the building is never left open.
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common questions

Does old roofing felt contain asbestos?
Some bituminous felts and damp-proof courses made before the 1980s contain chrysotile. It’s well bound into the bitumen, making it one of the lower-risk asbestos products — but it still needs identifying and disposing of correctly.
Can I strip an old felt roof myself?
Tearing off suspect felt dry-shreds the material and spreads debris. If the shed or flat roof predates the mid-80s, test first; if positive, removal is straightforward lower-risk work for a contractor, and the disposal paperwork matters as much as the removal.
How is asbestos felt disposed of?
As bonded asbestos waste: wrapped, consigned and taken to a licensed facility — it cannot go in a skip or the tip’s hardcore pile. You receive the consignment note as proof.
