Does old roofing felt contain asbestos?
Some bituminous felts and damp-proof courses made before the 1980s contain chrysotile. It’s well bound into the bitumen, making it one of the lower-risk asbestos products — but it still needs identifying and disposing of correctly.
Can I strip an old felt roof myself?
Tearing off suspect felt dry-shreds the material and spreads debris. If the shed or flat roof predates the mid-80s, test first; if positive, removal is straightforward lower-risk work for a contractor, and the disposal paperwork matters as much as the removal.
How is asbestos felt disposed of?
As bonded asbestos waste: wrapped, consigned and taken to a licensed facility — it cannot go in a skip or the tip’s hardcore pile. You receive the consignment note as proof.
