Can sheet vinyl flooring contain asbestos?
Yes — older sheet vinyl sometimes has an asbestos paper backing, and the tile-format thermoplastics of the 1950s–80s often contain chrysotile in the tile body itself. Kitchens, bathrooms and hallways are the usual finds.
Is asbestos-backed vinyl dangerous to walk on?
No — in use it’s sealed and stable. The risk is at removal: pulling up backed vinyl tears the asbestos paper apart. That’s why suspect floors get tested before a refurbishment, not after the flooring fitter has started.
How is asbestos vinyl removed?
As controlled lower-risk work in most cases: the floor is damped, lifted carefully to keep the backing intact, and everything is double-bagged and consigned. Where backing has bonded to the screed, we treat and clear it so the new floor can go straight down.
