Asbestos Cisterns & Composite Mouldings.

Dark composite toilet cisterns and seats, window sills and boards, draining boards and moulded panels from the 1950s to the late 1970s — asbestos fibre mixed into resin or bitumen to make a hard, heavy, usually black material.

Very low while intact — the fibre is locked into the resin. Breaking, sawing or drilling it releases fibre, and cisterns almost always get broken out during DIY strip-outs. Handled removal keeps them whole.

A £125 UKAS lab test before the bathroom is ripped out settles it. If positive, we remove the units intact, bag and consign them, and the refit carries on the same week.

Weight and colour are the giveaways: composite cisterns are noticeably heavier than plastic, usually black or very dark brown, with a slightly waxy or fibrous look at any chipped edge. Bakelite-style seats and mouldings from the same era can also carry asbestos fill — you cannot confirm any of it by eye, only by testing.

The right order costs almost nothing — test first, remove the suspect items intact and consigned, then let the fitters in. Are black toilet cisterns asbestos?

Many pre-1980s dark composite cisterns contain asbestos fibre mixed into the resin. They are heavy, hard and usually black — but only a lab test confirms it.

Is an asbestos cistern dangerous?

Intact, it is among the lowest-risk asbestos items in a house — the fibre is bound into the material. The risk is breaking it up during removal.

Can I remove one myself?

The safe answer is test first. If it is positive, handled removal keeps the unit whole and the waste properly consigned — it is a small, inexpensive job done right.
