Asbestos Bath Panels & Window Boards.

The forgotten domestic asbestos: small cement and AIB boards hiding in bathrooms and around windows in almost every pre-1980 home.

Where you'll find them

Bath side panels, window boards and sills, toilet cisterns, airing cupboard linings and boxing around pipes, quick jobs for a 1960s joiner, headaches for a 2020s renovator.

The risk

Low while painted and intact; released when bathrooms are ripped out. Most bathroom-fitter horror stories start with an untested bath panel.

Removal and cost

A sample costs around £125; removal of individual boards is often a same-day visit priced in the low hundreds, and easily bundled with a bathroom or window replacement schedule. Figures are industry guide rates, not Innov8 Group prices, we're typically cheaper. Contact us for an official quotation.

Why bath panels were made from AIB

A bath panel needed to be cheap, rigid, waterproof-ish and easy to cut — exactly what asbestos insulation board offered. From the 1960s to the early 1980s millions of UK bathrooms were fitted with AIB panels, usually painted to match the suite. AIB is one of the higher-risk materials in a home: soft, low-density and quick to release fibre when cut, drilled or snapped. The confusion with harmless hardboard or plywood panels is constant, and you cannot tell them apart by eye — our AIB guide explains the difference in detail.

The plumber problem

Bath panels get disturbed more than almost any other domestic asbestos material, because every leak, re-silicone and bathroom refit starts with pulling the panel off. Done dry and casually, that snaps board, leaves debris under the bath and contaminates the void — and the first anyone knows about it is a positive dust sample years later. If a trade has already broken a suspected panel, stop work, keep the room closed and read our disturbed asbestos guide.

Removal, cost and what happens after

An intact AIB bath panel is one of the smaller licensed-contractor jobs we do: controlled removal, wrapping, air management and consigned disposal, usually within a half day. Because the board is a single sealed piece, removal is often cheaper than people fear — and it is frequently bundled with an Artex ceiling or floor covering in the same bathroom refit. FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common questions

Are old bath panels really asbestos?
Many pre-1980s rigid bath panels are AIB or asbestos cement — it was cheap, waterproof and easy to cut. Plastic and hardboard panels from the same era are fine; the problem is telling rigid boards apart, which takes a lab test.
Can I just replace a suspect bath panel myself?
Unscrewing an intact panel and setting it aside is low risk, but cutting, snapping or drilling it is not — that’s when fibres release. If the panel needs breaking to come out, or it’s already damaged, have it tested and removed properly.
What does bath panel removal cost?
It’s one of the cheapest asbestos jobs there is — typically a small fixed fee including disposal and paperwork, often done alongside other bathroom strip-out. Send a photo and we’ll quote it within 24 hours.
