Eight places nobody expects

Most of these are perfectly safe sitting undisturbed. The risk moment is renovation, replacement or clearance — which is why each entry says when it matters.

Old fuse boards & electrical panels

The black backing board behind pre-1980s fuse boxes and meter boards is often asbestos-based. Fine left alone — the risk is electricians drilling or replacing boards without checking. Any rewire of an older home should start with a look at that panel.

Night storage heaters

Storage heaters made before the mid-1970s can contain asbestos insulation packed around the elements. Intact and running, they release nothing; the danger is opening one up, moving it or stripping it for scrap. Check the model before touching.

Window putty & sealants

Some older glazing putties and mastics had asbestos added for durability. Very low risk in place — relevant only when windows are replaced and frames are cut, sanded or burned off.

Toilet cisterns & sink pads

Black and dark-grey plastic-like cisterns and the sound-deadening pads under old steel sinks can contain asbestos resin. They look nothing like the stereotype — see our bath panels guide for the bathroom family.

Fire blankets, ironing pads & oven gloves

Historic household goods — pre-1980s fire blankets, ironing board rests and oven gloves — were sometimes woven asbestos. Museum pieces now, but they surface in house clearances and lofts. Bag one gently, don’t shake it, and ask us about disposal.

Vehicle brakes & gaskets

Classic-car brake shoes, clutches and exhaust gaskets used asbestos into the 1980s. Restorers grinding old friction parts are the risk case — our gaskets guide covers it.

Under-stairs & airing cupboards

Flue pipes

Do old fuse boards contain asbestos?

Often, yes — the black backing panel behind pre-1980s fuse boxes is a classic asbestos product. It’s safe in place; the risk is drilling it or ripping it out during a rewire. Electricians should treat unidentified black backing boards as suspect and get them tested first.

Do storage heaters contain asbestos?

Models made before the mid-1970s can contain asbestos insulation inside the casing. In use and intact they release nothing. Never open, move or scrap an old storage heater without checking the make and model — many manufacturers’ asbestos lists are public, and we can check for you.

Is there asbestos in window putty?

Some older putties and sealants contain small amounts, added for durability. In the frame it poses effectively no risk. It matters when old windows come out — frames shouldn’t be cut, sanded or blowtorched until the putty’s been considered, ideally tested.

Are old household items with asbestos dangerous?
