Can I take asbestos to the tip?
Only if your council explicitly allows it — some accept small amounts of double-wrapped asbestos cement from householders at specific sites, many accept none. Loose or damaged materials like lagging or insulation board are never accepted. Check your council’s website before moving anything, and never mix asbestos with general waste.
Can asbestos go in a skip?
Never in a general skip — it contaminates the whole load and it’s illegal. Asbestos travels separately: dedicated asbestos collections or skips, double-wrapped, with a consignment note to a licensed facility. That service is exactly what a licensed contractor provides.
Does the council remove asbestos for free?
Rarely. Some councils run paid collection services for small quantities of wrapped cement sheets from households; a few subsidise it; many offer nothing. How do I report fly-tipped asbestos?
Don’t touch it. Report it to your local council through their fly-tipping page — they clear hazardous waste from public land — and to the Environment Agency for large or repeated dumping. On private land, clearance is the landowner’s responsibility.
