AIB ceiling removal at Newark MDU

A completed Innov8 UK Group project in Newark — delivered safely, documented fully and handed back on programme.
THE PROJECT

What we did

Licensed removal of an AIB ceiling — approx. 36m² — under a sealed enclosure with negative pressure and continuous air monitoring. HSE notification handled end to end and the area closed out with independent four-stage clearance.

Trained, medical-cleared operatives carried out the removal under full RPE and controlled wetting, with the enclosure air-tested throughout and dismantled only after independent clearance certification.

From depots in Manchester, Carlisle and London, Innov8 UK Group delivers licensed asbestos removal nationwide — including asbestos removal in Newark — with the same licensed teams, documentation and fixed written quotes on every job.

Scope of works & method

Overview of project and why the works are required

Following the management survey by an independent UKAS-accredited analytical company (the agreed date), Innov8 UK Group were instructed by the principal contractor on the agreed date to undertake licensed asbestos removal works within the Generator Room. A joint site visit was conducted on the agreed date with the principal contractor’s the principal contractor’s representative to assess the works and agree logistics.

The scope of works involves the removal of approx. 36 m² of Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) under fully controlled conditions, carried out within a purpose-built enclosure maintained under negative pressure. All plant and equipment within the room was studded, sheeted, and sealed with fire-retardant polythene incorporating breathable filters to allow safe ongoing operation.

The Generator Room remains critical to live rail operations. To maintain continuity, asbestos-trained the client maintenance staff may be granted controlled entry under the supervision of IUG supervisors our project manager (outside supervisor) and Martin Tyrer (inside support). Out-of-hours access was facilitated by IUG if urgent intervention was required, with a minimum response time of two hours from point of contact.

All works were undertaken in strict accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and IUG Standard Operating Procedures, with full fibre suppression, air monitoring, and decontamination procedures in place.

HOW THE ASBESTOS AND NON-ASBESTOS RISKS WERE CONTROLLED

All asbestos works were carried out within one purpose-built negative pressure enclosures using controlled H-type vacuums, appropriate RPE/PPE, continuous air monitoring, and licensed waste disposal to prevent fibre release. Non-asbestos risks including live services, manual handling, slips/trips, noise, vibration, and potential heat was controlled through permits to work, supervision, segregation, housekeeping, task rotation, and welfare measures. These combined controls ensure both asbestos and wider site hazards are safely managed while maintaining operational continuity.

OBSTRUCTIONS MAKING ACCESS AND THE WORKS MORE DIFFICULT Access and works are made more difficult by live plant located within the Generator room.
