Pre-2000 brake pads, shoes and linings, clutch facings, exhaust and manifold gaskets, head and carb gaskets, under-bonnet insulation felts and heat shields, and asbestos string or rope seals on older exhaust joints.

Never blow brake dust out with an airline — drum brake dust on an older vehicle is exactly the exposure the regulations exist to prevent. Wet-wipe or use proper extraction; treat drum and bell-housing dust as suspect by default.

We don't service cars. What we do: test suspect materials — a gasket, a lining, an insulation felt — and take the waste through licensed disposal. Restorers are welcome to send photos first.

If the car predates 2000, assume original friction parts and gaskets are asbestos until proven otherwise — and "new old stock" parts bought at autojumbles can be asbestos regardless of when you fit them. Handle old linings whole and damp, bag what you remove, and keep dust down with wet methods. A £125 test on a suspect gasket set settles a restoration question for good.

The duty of care is the employer's: treat legacy friction dust as suspect, use wet cleaning or H-type extraction rather than airlines, and route removed asbestos parts through hazardous waste consignment rather than the scrap bin. It is a small procedural change that keeps technicians out of the exposure statistics — most of which came from exactly this work.

Asbestos vehicle parts cannot go in general scrap or the household tip's metal skip. Double-bag or wrap parts, label them, and consign them through a licensed route — we take small quantities alongside other waste collections, paperwork included. Do modern cars contain asbestos?

New asbestos parts were banned — but old stock, imported parts and anything fitted decades ago can still be present. Pre-2000 vehicles and NOS parts are the ones to treat as suspect.
