The heavy period is the 1930s to the 1970s: white or grey woven fibre pads on ironing boards and iron rests, stiff grey-white gloves and mats, fibre string or paper gaskets in heated appliances. By the 1980s substitutes had replaced most of it. If an item is post-1985 it is very unlikely to contain asbestos; mid-century kitchen and laundry textiles are the ones to treat with respect.

Some historic talc products were found to be contaminated with asbestos, and mid-century "fake snow" decorations were in some cases pure asbestos fibre sold as snow. Vintage decorations of that type should not be handled or displayed — bag them intact for licensed disposal. For anything ambiguous, a £125 lab test answers it definitively.

Leave intact items alone or retire them; never machine-wash, shake out or sand anything suspect; double-bag small items (two sealed bags) and take them through the licensed disposal route rather than the household bin.
