FAQS · SURVEYS & TESTING

How does asbestos testing work and how fast are results?.

Asbestos testing is quick, inexpensive and definitive — the opposite of guessing. A small sample of the suspect material is taken under controlled conditions, sealed and analysed at a UKAS-accredited laboratory, which identifies whether asbestos is present and which type.
For most samples, results are available within 24–48 hours, and same-day analysis is possible when a project is time-critical.

How a sample is taken

The sampling point is dampened, a thumbnail-sized piece is removed with hand tools, and the point is sealed with encapsulant. The sample travels double-bagged with a chain-of-custody record. Taken properly, sampling releases negligible fibre — taking it improperly is how people expose themselves, which is why we advise against DIY sampling of anything friable.
Our free photo ID service is a useful first filter: send a photo and we will tell you whether it is worth sampling at all.

What the lab does

Laboratories use polarised light microscopy to identify asbestos fibre types — chrysotile, amosite or crocidolite. The result tells you what the material is, which drives everything else: whether work is non-licensed, NNLW or licensed, how it must be removed and how the waste must travel.

What happens while you wait

Treat the material as asbestos until proven otherwise: keep people away, do not disturb it further, and hold any works in the area. Twenty-four hours of caution is cheap insurance.

Testing vs surveying

Testing answers a question about one material. If you are buying, managing or refurbishing a whole building, you need a survey — sampling is part of it, but the survey ties every material into a plan. We do both, across the North West and UK-wide.
