Are asbestos floor tiles dangerous?.
Thermoplastic and vinyl floor tiles laid from the 1950s to the early 1980s commonly contain chrysotile asbestos, and the black bitumen adhesive that bonded them down very often does too. They turn up in homes, schools, shops, offices and hospitals — frequently hidden under later carpet or laminate.
Like asbestos cement, tiles are a bonded, lower-risk material: the fibres are locked into the tile and the risk arises when they are smashed, sanded or ground off.

How to recognise and confirm them
Suspect tiles are typically 9-inch squares in mottled or marbled colours, brittle with age, over a black adhesive residue. But appearance is never proof — a sample of tile and adhesive tested at a laboratory settles it within a day or two. Always test before floor preparation, screeding or grinding work.
Removal done properly
Removal of asbestos floor tiles is normally non-licensed work. Tiles are lifted whole where possible using hand scrapers and low-heat techniques, kept damp, and double-bagged as asbestos waste. The critical rule is never to sand, grind or shot-blast the adhesive — that is what turns a low-risk floor into an airborne fibre problem. Residual bitumen is either removed with controlled methods or encapsulated beneath the new floor build-up.
On commercial projects we often carry out reassurance air testing during and after works.
Can they stay in place?
Yes — sound tiles that will sit under a new floor finish can often be encapsulated and left, recorded in the asbestos register. That is frequently the most proportionate answer for occupied buildings. The decision should follow a survey or assessment rather than habit either way.
