What should I do if asbestos has been disturbed?.
Stop work immediately. Keep everyone out of the affected area, close doors, and do not attempt to sweep, vacuum or clean up the material — ordinary cleaning spreads fibres and turns a small incident into a contaminated building. Then get competent help to assess and make the area safe.
This is the HSE's core advice for uncontrolled disturbance, and the first hour matters more than anything that happens afterwards.

The immediate steps
Stop the task and switch off anything moving air — fans, air conditioning, dust extraction. Get people out of the room and shut it. If clothing is visibly contaminated, it should be left in the area or bagged, not worn home or brushed down. Make a note of who was present and for how long. Do not re-enter to inspect, photograph through the doorway if you safely can, and do not put anything in the general waste.
Getting the area assessed
A competent asbestos contractor or analyst will identify whether the material actually contains asbestos (fast-turnaround testing if there is no survey record), assess the spread, and specify the clean-up. Minor incidents may need only a controlled clean and reassurance air testing; larger ones need a full environmental clean under controlled conditions before the area passes air testing and reopens. If people were exposed
Record the incident properly: what the material was, who was present, for how long, and what the air testing later showed. Employers should log it and consider whether it is RIDDOR-reportable, and anyone exposed should tell their GP so it is on their medical record. A single brief exposure carries a small individual risk — but the record matters, and so does making sure it cannot happen again.
Stopping the repeat
Uncontrolled disturbance almost always traces back to missing information: no survey, an out-of-date register, or contractors who never saw it. Fix the source — commission the right survey and get the register in front of everyone who works on the building — and the incident becomes the last one.
