FAQS · REMOVAL & PROCESS

How long does asbestos removal take?.

The removal itself is often quicker than people expect: a single garage roof is typically half a day, an Artex ceiling one to two days, and a domestic AIB job a few days. What stretches programmes is not the stripping — it is the lead-in: testing, quotation and, for licensed work, the mandatory 14-day HSE notification period before work can start.
Plan backwards from your project date and the timescales look very different.

Typical durations by job type

Asbestos cement garage roof: half a day to a day. Artex to a single room: one to two days. Floor tiles to a domestic room: a day. Licensed AIB removal in a house or small commercial unit: two to five days including enclosure set-up and clearance. Larger licensed strip-outs in commercial or industrial buildings: one to several weeks, driven by enclosure size, access and phasing. Every job gets a programme in the quotation, so you know before you commit.

The 14-day notification

Licensed work cannot legally start until 14 days after the HSE has been notified (the ASB5 notification). That period is fixed — it is not a target or an average — so a licensed job needs its paperwork in motion at least three weeks before you want operatives on site once the survey, quote and plan of work are in place. NNLW notification, by contrast, is submitted online before work starts with no waiting period.

What else affects the programme

Laboratory turnaround for samples (24–48 hours), scaffold or access equipment, occupied-building constraints such as out-of-hours working, the analyst's availability for the four-stage clearance, and reinstatement works afterwards. On refurbishment projects the biggest saving is simply surveying early — asbestos found mid-programme stops everything.

Working around your dates

We routinely phase removal around school holidays, factory shutdowns and tenant decants, and can carry out evening and weekend working where the programme demands it. Tell us the immovable dates and we will build the notification and clearance around them.
