Zero Disruption — Asbestos Removal on a Live Railway Station

By the Innov8 UK Group team
Working on a live station means locked units, tidy compounds and zero disruption. Inside an Innov8 UK Group asbestos project on the Network Rail estate.

Removing asbestos from railway premises is not only about the material — it is about doing it in the middle of a working transport hub without affecting operations. In June 2025, Innov8 UK Group returned to trackside premises at Retford station on the Network Rail estate, and the project is a case study in disciplined, low-impact working.

The standards a live station demands

An internal audit during the works captured the standards that railway premises require. Decontamination unit doors must be locked whenever the unit is not in active use, to keep the site secure in a public environment. Vehicles and the working compound must be kept clean and orderly. Airlock flaps on the enclosure must be correctly weighted so they seal properly every time an operative passes through.

These may sound like small details, but on a live station they are the difference between a controlled site and a compromised one. Every point raised was addressed on site the same day and circulated to the wider team by memo — the mark of a contractor that treats continuous improvement as routine.

Control that never drops

The asbestos itself was removed under the same fully controlled regime we apply everywhere: a sealed enclosure under negative pressure, shadow vacuuming, controlled wetting, decontamination through a DCU, personal air monitoring, and an independent four-stage clearance before handback. What changes on the railway is the environment around that enclosure — and the discipline needed to keep the public, station staff and rail operations completely unaffected.

Trusted on the network

Railway asbestos work rewards contractors who plan meticulously and leave no trace. Innov8 UK Group has built its reputation on exactly that — delivering licensed asbestos removal across the Network Rail estate, from relay rooms and signal boxes to station buildings and depots, with zero disruption to the travelling public.
